Katherine Dereli: Painting
I am an artist working in the figurative tradition. I paint in oils as well as producing sculptural ceramics and larger scale plaster sculpture.
I see representational paintings and sculptures as strange fascinating cultural objects. We often think of them as transcriptions of reality but, a lot of the time, they are more like personal statements about things written in a shared visual language.
I work, where possible, directly from the subject minimising the use of interpretative intermediaries such as photography. I want someone looking at what I do to be closer to the raw perception. I want what I work on to be more like how things look to me than how photographs of things look.
